"State Institute of Applied Optics" (GIPO)
The Scientific Production Association State Institute of Applied Optics comprises several departments and a plant in Kazan. The Association's properties cover an area of 22 hectares.
The number of employees is 3,500 including 120 with degrees. The Associations runs a post graduate course and has a developed social infrastructure.
The Director General of NPO GIPO is Mr. Alexei S. Makarov (an extramural Member of the Engineering Academy of the Council of Ministers of the USSR in the field of science and technology).
NPO GIPO is a science and technology centre which concentrates on scientific and technological problems in optics and optical electronics in the infra-red spectrum (from stydying physical problems to carrying out the research and development work and, in
some isolated cases, small-scale production in such priority fieldes as thermal imaging, georesource research and ecological monitoring).
The Association has departments for:
Environmental studies
Optical System design
State-of-the-art optical parts and elements (aspherical, metallic, crystalline, integrated, holographic diffraction optics, optical coatings of all types, etc.)
Semiconducting materials for radiation detectors
Manufacturing detectors
Developing, designing, manufacturing, testing and conducting metrological certifications of E/O devices.
The most considerable achievements of NPO GIPO are:
Manufacturing a range of spectral, interference and holographic devices (more than 30 types) of national economic significance;
Developing semiconductor technology for IR detectors - a ternary mercury - cadmium-tellurium compound and mercury-doped germanium. The processes of manufacturing diffraction and aspherical optics and making interference optical coatings have developed
to a level equal to the world's best. These developments were introduced in the companies in our country.
Employees' work on environmental studies, spectroradiometry, semiconductors, holography, optical coatings and diffraction gratings has gained the recognition of research centres in Russia and abroad.
NPO GIPO is closely connected with the companies of the Defence industry Commitee (Russia) and other Departments of the Russian and Community of Independent States' governments.
It has developed defense equipment on order to the Defence Ministry of the Russian Federation and has taken the role of co-executor in research and development work and major applied research to select initial data for designing E/O systems and developing
and manufacturing state-of-the-art optical elements.
The tematic orientation and infrastructure of NPO GIPO allow it to develop dual use devices and technologies.
Within the scope of conversion and state research programmes in the Russian Federation and Tatarstan Republic, NPO GIPO has been developing devices for fuel and energy,agriculture, wood processing, petrochemical and ecological complexes, as well as for
the Ministry of Public Health.
