The following modification have been created on the basis of the helicopter MI-8MT:

• transport modification MI-172 (cargo-carrying and passenger -carrying). It has FAR-296 flying certificate given by Indian Aviation Register.
• "Saloon" modification - very comfortable model for transportation of 7, 9 or 11 passengers, furnished with upholstered armchairs, settees and tables and equipped with heat insulation and soundproofing system, vibration damping system as well as with cloak-room and toilet;
• medical modification "flying hospital" which can be used for emergency aid to casualtes. It is equipped with all special apparatus which together with qualified staff can provide vital activity during transportation of seriously ill persons and new-born children to specialized hospitals;
• "flying laboratory" modification is to be used for timely control of environment and production facilities;
• agricultural modification designed for treating of arable crops, forests, orchards, pastures with herbicides and weed- and pest-killers;
• fire control modification equipped with water tank (up to 4.3 cu.m). The modification allows firemen to drop from the helicopters without using a parachute.
