The regional workshop carried out by the heads of theoretical mechanics departments of the Russian Federation Central and Privolzhski Federal districts’ high schools took place in Ulyanovsk State University in September, 2002. Within five days from September, 11 till September, 15 current problems of mechanics teaching were discussed at the university camp site “Chaika”, located on a beautiful Volga river bank. Diverse questions of mechanics teaching technique were touched on in reports and discussed at the round-table sessions, the correspondence of volume and contents within the course of mechanics to current requirements of experts’ training was considered by the participants as well as the necessity of students’ involving into research work. 22 representatives from various high schools of Moscow, Kazan, Saratov, Ulyanovsk and other cities of the Russian Central and Privolzhski Federal districts took part in the workshop. The review of questions, presented in the reports at the workshop, there is in this issue.

In the final conclusion of the workshop, in addition to the known thesis that “there can not be a graduate engineer without a profound knowledge of theoretical mechanics”, it was unanimously admitted that the confirmation of new State Standards on engineering specialities must be necessarily fulfilled in coordination and with participation of Scientific-methodical Council on theoretical mechanics of the Education Ministry of Russian Federation.
