The International Scientific Conference "Actual problems of mathematics and mechanics" took place in Kazan from the 26-th of September to the 1-st of October, 2004. The Conference Organizers are Chebotarev Scientific-Research Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics (SRIMM) and mechanical and mathematical faculty of Kazan State University (KSU). The Conference became one more scientific event, organized on the basis of N.I.Lobachevski Mathematical Centre attached to KSU with the participation of Kazan Mathematical Society, and was carried out within the celebration of 200-th Anniversary of Kazan State University and was organized due to support of the Russian Foundation of Fundamental investigations and Sciences Academy of Tatarstan Republic.

The Conference was aimed at summing up the results and defining the prospects of the development of mathematics and mechanics, first and foremost, in KSU for near future; at attraction the youth to scientific research in the actual fields of mathematics and mechanics; at providing contacts among the Russian scientific Schools.

The main directions of the Conference activity: geometry, boundary value problems for analytical functions, differential equations, integral and integro-differential equations, the theory of functions and functional analysis, aero-hydromechanics, the theory of elasticity, computing mathematics, quantum computer science.

The Conference was arranged for a number of Anniversary dates. The main is the 200-th Anniversary of Kazan University. The achievements of Kazan mathematicians and mechanicists are inseparable from the university scientific traditions since the day of its foundation.

Nikolai Ivanovich Lobachevski was their Founder. A brilliant mathematician, the Creator of the non-Euclidian Geometry - his name is the first mentioned when one starts speaking about Kazan University. Nikolai Ivanovich was not only a scientist, but also a perfect organizer: for 20 years he was the Rector of Kazan University in the difficult period of its formation and development. Before the revolution the most famous mathematicians and mechanicists A.F.Popov, F.M.Suvorov, A.V.Vasilyev, D.M.Sintsov, A.P.Kotelnikov and others were working in KSU. After the revolution the fame of Kazan School of mathematics and mechanics was formed by N.G.Chebotarev, State Prize-Winner, the corresponding member of the Sciences Academy of the USSR; A.Z.Petrov, Lenin Prize-Winner, Academician of the Sciences Academy of Ukraine; N.G.Chetaev, Lenin Prize-Winner, the corresponding member of the Sciences Academy of the USSR; F.D. Gakhov, Academician of the Sciences Academy of Belarus; Professors P.A.Shirokov, N.N.Parfentyev, K.P.Persidski, B.M.Gagayev, K.M.Mushtari, A.P.Norden, K.Z.Galimov, V.V.Morozov, B.L.Laptev, A.V.Sachenkov, G.G.Tumashev, M.T.Nuzhin, A.V.Suldin, A.P.Shirokov, L.I.Chibrikova, Y.P.Zhigalko and others. Before 1960 the researches in the field of mathematics and mechanics in KSU were carried out at the faculty of physics and mathematics and at SRIMM. Then the faculty of mechanics and mathematics emerged from the faculty of physics and mathematics. In 1978 on the basis of the faculty of mechanics and mathematics and SRIMM there was founded the faculty of computing mathematics and cybernetics. Currently the faculty of mechanics and mathematics comprises six mathematical departments (of algebra, geometry, differential equations, mathematical analysis, general mathematics, the theory of functions and approximations), and also - the departments of aero-hydromechanics and theoretical mechanics, the staff of which is formed by 20 doctors of sciences and 45 candidates.

The other Anniversary, to which the Conference was arranged, is the 70-th Anniversary of SRIMM, one of the oldest University Institutions of the country. Its foundation was initiated by the outstanding persons, luminaries of science, professors of mathematics and mechanics of Kazan University - N.G.Chebotarev, N.N.Parfentyev, P.A.Shirokov, N.G.Chetaev. Such known scientists as N.G.Chebotarev, N.G.Chetaev, P.A.Shirokov, N.N.Parfentyev, I.D.Ado, N.N.Meyman B.M.Gagaev, M.I.Almukhamedov, V.V.Morozov, B.L.Laptev, G.H.Maksudov, F.D.Gakhov, K.P.Persidski, V.A.Yablokov, I.G.Malin, L.I.Gavrilov, G.G.Tumashev, M.T.Nuhzin, A.P.Norden, S.N.Andrianov, A.Z.Petrov, P.I.Petrov, S.F.Sajkin were working as researchers in SRIMM. The scientific schools created by them are still developing. The role of SRIMM in training scientific staff of high qualification and integration of scientific and research activities in mathematics and mechanics in Kazan is extremely important. The Institute provides substantial assistance to supporting the high level of mathematical science in other Research Institutes and Higher Schools involving the teachers and other members of the staff to scientific researches and grants.

At the plenary sessions new results in the field of geometry, analysis, the theory of fractional differentiation and integration, the theory of functions, optimal control were discussed. Their themes are:

-  V.A.Ilyin, E.I.Moiseev (Moscow). Optimal boundary control of dislocation and elastic force of the string.

-  P.L.Ulyanov (Moscow). To 90-th Anniversary of Luzin Mathematical School.

-  A.A.Kilbas (Minsk). Several trends in the theory of differential and integral equations of fractional order.

-  V.V.Vishnevski (Kazan). The development of mathematical researches in Kazan University.

-  V.V.Klokov (Kazan). Outstanding mechanicists of Kazan University.

-  E. P.Dolzhenko (Moscow). The spaces of polyanalytical functions.

-  Y.Mikesh (Czech). Geodesic curves and their generalizations.

-  N.I.Zhukova (Nizhnij Novgorod). The geometry of Cartan layers.

Within the Conference there was carried out the session connected with the discussion of results, researches in mathematics and mechanics fulfilled in SRIMM for seventy years of its existence (the speakers - U.G.Konoplyov, Academician of the Sciences Academy of Tatarstan Republic; A.V.Kuznetsov and D.K.Mushtari, corresponding members of the Sciences Academy of Tatarstan Republic).

Within the Conference there was carried out a geometrical Seminar, devoted to 100-th Anniversary of the outstanding Kazan geometer A.P.Norden and the 75-th Anniversary of professor V.V.Vishnevski. The following papers were presented:

-  M.A.Malakhaltsev, V.V. Shurygin (Kazan). A.P.Norden is an outstanding Kazan geometrician;

-  G.E.Izotov (Kazan). About first years of A.P.Norden in Kazan University;

-  M.A.Malakhaltsev, V.V.Shurygin (Kazan). A.P.Norden scientific legacy;

-  A.Salimov (Baku), V.V.Shurygin (Kazan). About the works of V.V.Vishnevski.

There were organized the following sections:

The functional analysis (13 papers);

The theory of elasticity (20 papers);

Quantum computer science (9 papers);

Differential equations (35 papers);

Geometry (22 papers);

Computing mathematics (13 papers);

Mechanics (24 papers);

Integral and integral-differential equations (22 papers);

Real and complex analysis (27 papers).

The problems reflected in the papers of the sections mentioned above corresponds to actual trends of the development of mathematics and mechanics. Its considerable part is successfully solved by the Russian scientists and they have priority in the corresponding fields.

The themes of the Conference and the majority of researches, the results of which were presented, are supported by the Russian Foundation of Fundamental researches. According to the common opinion, the scientific level of the Conference proved to be worth of the traditions of Kazan Mathematical School, in general due to high scientific potential of the participants, among whom there was an Academician of Russian Sciences Academy, 2 corresponding members of RSA, 41 doctors of sciences, 55 candidates, 48 young scientists and post-graduates. The wide geography (147 participants from 29 Russian cities, the CIS and abroad) contributed to fruitful exchange of ideas and experience of different scientific schools.

Scientists from Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Turkey and Czech took part in the Conference.

The young participants of School (48 people) got the opportunity not only to get acquainted with new scientific theories, but also represent their own results in front of the known scientists, get their estimation, consultations, exchange opinions. The most active was the participation of the young representatives of the scientific centers of Kazan, Samara and Yoshkar-Ola.
