Vladimir L.Fedyaev, Director of Institute

The Institute of Mechanics and Engineering of Kazan Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IME KSC RAS) was founded in 1991 on the basis of mechanics divisions of Kazan Physical Technical Institute. M.A.Ilgamov, Corresponding Member of RAS, was elected the first Director of IME KSC RAS, nowadays being the Scientific Chief of the Institute.

In 1996 IME KSC RAS is elected as Collective Member of International Federation of Non-linear Analysts (IFNA); and in 1996 M.A.Ilgamov is elected as Full Member (Academician) of Academy of Non-linear Sciences (ANS).

Formation of mechanics in the Kazan Branch of the Academy of Sciences started since 1946. Professor Kh.M.Mushtari, the outstanding scientist in mechanics, was the first director of Kazan Physical Technical Institute. Later on a valuable contribution to the development of mechanics at Kazan Physical Technical Institute was made by the famous scientists K.Z.Galimov, G.S.Salehov, M.S.Kornyshin, M.A.Ilgamov and others. The half-century history of research in the area of mechanics in Kazan Branch of the Academy of Sciences was labeled with the following largest landmarks.

The basis of up-to-date non-linear theory of elastic shells was laid by Kh.M.Mushtari, K.Z.Galimov. Their monograph "The non-linear theory of elastic shells" (1957) was republished in foreign languages and became the classic one in its field of knowledge. Under the guidance of Kh.M.Mushtari the Kazan school of the theory of shells was formed.

Efficient numerical and variation methods of analysis of non-linear behavior of elastic and elastic-plastic shells, including the composite ones were worked out. The results were widely adopted in aircraft building, rocket production, shipbuilding, chemical engineering industry (Kh.M.Mushtari, K.Z.Galimov, M.S.Kornyshin, I.G.Teregulov, I.V.Svirsky, M.S.Ganeyeva, N.M.Yakupov and others).

Non-linear theory of interaction of thin-walled structure elements with working media (liquid, gas, soils) was developed. The results are used in mechanical engineering, engine production, pipeline and parachute system design (M.A.Ilgamov, B.V.Gulin, V.A.Ivanov, V.V.Ridel, R.G.Yakupov and others). The scientific school of aerohydroelasticity was founded by M.A.Ilgamov.

Analytical and numerical methods of oil-content contour determination in working conditions of supercharging and extracting wells were devised (G.S.Salekhov, V.D.Chugunov, V.L.Danilov, V.V.Skvortsov, M.Kh.Khairullin, A.I.Nikiforov and others).

Nonstationary wave motion of gas with liquid drops was explored; working processes in engines, in a number of technological plants were calculated. In particular, the processes of moving away gases cleaning were examined (M.A.Ilgamov, G.A.Gubaidullin, R.G.Zaripov, G.M.Sakhabutdinov, V.L.Fedyaev and others).

The main research directions in IME KSC RAS at present

  • Non-linear mechanics of thin-walled constructions, hydroaeroelastic and wave systems.
  • Dynamics of multiphase multicomponent media in porous structures and technological plants.
  • Non-linear stability theory of control systems with changeable structure.

    Achievements for the last years

Theory and methods of stress, strain and stability analysis of shells of complex geometry under intensive thermoforce loading, with consideration of physical and geometrical nonlinearity, interaction with aggressive media were developed. Methods to reduce concentration of strains and stresses in dangerous zones of reservoir for cryogen liquid were suggested. Durability prediction of large-scale cooling tower constructions was made (M.S.Ganeyeva, N.M.Yakupov and others).

Theoretical and experimental investigations of shock waves in gas-filled closed and open tubes were performed using analytical and numerical methods. Non-linear and chaotic oscillations of cylindrical shell in a flow of gas; of a gas cavity in liquid under sonoluminescence condition; of a tube with liquid; of a superconducting cable; of polydispersal steam-gas-drop media were studied (M.A.Ilgamov, R.G.Zaripov, D.A.Gubaidullin, A.A.Aganin, A.L.Tukmakov and others).

A multi-purpose procedure of numerical solution of problems of viscous gas flow about aerodynamic objects; of gas motion in three-dimensional domains of complex configuration with consideration of chemical reactions and intensive heat supply was created. Deceleration of supersonic gas flow in a plane channel was analyzed. Special features of working processes in the chamber of internal-combustion engine, in a furnace of a spectrometer were studied (A.N.Gilmanov, Zh.M.Sakhabutdinov and others).

Special methods of numerical solving the tasks of water flooding the oil pools in complicated physical-geological conditions; of determining the filtering parameters while the nonstationary filtration on the base of incorrect problems theory; of discovering the situation of a source of water-bearing stratum pollution were developed. Variation principles for the problem of filtering in the deformated medium of compound reology were built (M.Kh.Khairullin, A.I.Nikiforov, P.A.Mazurov and others).

Mathematical models were created, on the basis of which physical-mechanical processes of electric arc welding and thermo-hardening the hardware, the motion of steam-gas-drop mixture in cooling towers, flow of thermo-unbalanced plasma in discharging cameras of plasma generators were studied (A.B.Mazo, V.L.Fedyaev, F.A.Salyanov and others).

The method of vector functions by Lyapunov was developed for investigating the stability of non-linear logical-dynamic systems of control and systems with random structure changes. Flow of liquid with free surface consideration the contact line of three phases division, the processes of heat mass transfer while fraction crystallization were studied. Analytical solutions of the problem of control of mass flow rate of space objects for the future were obtained (A.I.Malikov, F.H.Tazioukov, P.P.Ossipov, U.N.Zakirov).
