Nanosatellite Attitude Control Systems

Interacted with the Geomagnetic Field

Michael Ovchinnikov

Paper presents some philosophy on small satellites, a brief description of two projects - Swedish nanosatellite Munin being developed by the Institute of Space Physics (Kiruna Division, Sweden) and Russia n/US nanosatellite REFLECTOR being developed by the Scientific Research Institute for Precise Device Engineering (the Space Device Engineering Corporation, Moscow, Russia), and investigation results of these satellites dynamics. Mass of each satellite is approximately equal to 6 kg. Both satellites are planned to be launched in 2000. Their attitude control systems contain hysteresis rods as a damping instrument, which are manufactured out of soft magnetic material. In order to develop restoring torque's a strong permanent magnet and a proper satellite mass distribution are used. The main problems occurred during the ACS development process are briefly considered.
