The article presents the information concerning the specialities,
departments and scientific schools of the institute of Aviation, Ground
Transport and Power Engineering at A.N.Tupolev KSTU – KAI (Kazan Aviation
Institute).
The Institute of Aviation, Ground Transport and Power Engineering (IAGTPE) at
A.N.Tupolev KSTU was founded in May, 1999 (by the decision of A.N.Tupolev KSTU
Academic Board) as an educational-scientific University Division. The base of
the institute comprises departments, educational-scientific laboratories and
the centres of two oldest KAI Faculties: the Faculty of Aircrafts (foundation
date 1934) and the Faculty of Aircraft Engines (foundation date 1939). These
Faculties presented large educational-scientific Sub-Divisions, which gave
birth to authoritative scientific schools – the basis of diverse current
scientific trends of KSTU.
Through all the years of their existence in the
system of native aerospace high engineering education the Faculties of
Aircrafts and of Aircraft Engines provided a high level of education, proved by
the achievements of native aviation, rocket technique and cosmonautics. These
achievements resulted from the labour of 19 thousand Faculty graduates, who
acquired engineering diplomas in the field of aircraft and rocket building.
Among the Faculties’ graduates there are creators of modern aircrafts and
rocket systems, the supervisors of large industrial enterprises and aircraft and
rocket building plants, known state leaders and ministers, high school rectors,
the members of Academy of Sciences of Russian Federation, Academy of Sciences
of the Republic of Tatarstan and other academies [1,2].
The reforming of political and economical bases
of Russian Federation produced a bad influence on the state of aircraft and
aerospace fields: enterprises do not get the necessary volume of orders,
changed their activity direction and/or ceased their functioning; the
development prospects are not stable and there is no field strategic planning.
Considerable changes took place in High school
system. For many reasons since 1990-s aerospace and many other technical
specialties have lost prestige among the youth.
There were problems with the students’
admission to the aircraft and rocket specialities. The Faculties of Aircrafts
and Aircraft Engines needed new technical specialities, which would be in great
demand among the youth. By late 1990-s these Faculties have already acquired
the experience necessary for the introduction of new specialities, as a rule,
based on the existing Faculty possibilities. For instance, there appeared
specialities “Motor-vehicles and motor economy” (150200), “Combustion Engines”
(101200), “Design and composite material goods production” (121000) and others.
The limited field specialization of educational and other activities of the Faculties of
Aircrafts and Aircraft Engines, reflected in their names, gradually
disappeared, and the list of specialities potentially attractive for the youth
and enterprises presently covers transport, power engineering, technological
and other specialities. Under these circumstances it occurred to be reasonable
to establish a kind of subdivision on the basis of the Faculties of Aircrafts
and Aircraft Engines – the Institute of Aviation, Ground Transport and
Power Engineering (IAGTPE).
Nowadays the institute trains graduate
engineers in 18 specialities. In 2001 the plan of the admission to the daytime

The scientific and technical potential of the
institute departments is characterized by high qualitative and quantitative
indicators in educational process, as well as in research work, including
fundamental, applied work and experimental-construction elaborations.
Till early 1990-s, i.e. the beginning of a
reformation period in Russian history, the themes of scientific researches of
the department staff and research laboratories of IAGTPE mostly corresponded to
the following large scientific trends:
management, dynamics and cohesion of aircrafts,
including the problems of aerodynamics;
physical and technical problems of aircraft
engines and power installations;
progressive technologies, production methods
and devices in aviation and rocket construction and mechanical construction.
Considerable achievements of the institute
scientists have got acknowledgment of scientific and technical-engineering
publicity. Hundreds articles of the institute scientists can be found in
prestigious native journals and foreign issues, numerous monographs are published
by the authoritative publishing houses “Nauka”, “Mashinostroyenie”, “Vyshaya
shkola” and others. Many of these monographs have become the table books of
scientific workers, engineers and aspirants. Some works are awarded the State
premium of the USSR and have become laureates of the contest of the scientific
papers of the High School Ministry of the USSR. The detailed description of
scientific and other achievements of KSTU (KAI) for 60 years since the day of
its foundation (i.e. before the beginning of considerable reformation in
Russia) is presented in the work [1].
In 1990-s Russia experienced and still
undergoes considerable political and economical reforms; the state of
enterprises and establishments of the military-industrial complex, the main
customer of research work in IAGTPE, considerably deteriorated. As a result
elaborations based on the state agreement and carried out by many departments
together with these enterprises factually stopped or significantly decreased in
volume. In these conditions the fulfillment of fundamental scientific research
has become impossible, since very often the scientific researches were
accomplished by withdrawing a part of means, given by enterprises for
completing applied scientific research work. Moreover, many enterprises,
especially in the course of the last years, were practically interested only in
the stage of experimental construction elaborations of a life cycle, finished
by the elaboration (or the elaboration organization) of a test-industrial or
experimental sample by the executor itself (a department or laboratory). The
previous years experimental construction work (elaborations) were completed by
the enterprises, the role of institute scientists in joint activity, including
that on the basis of economy agreement with the enterprise, was presented by
the accomplishment of applied work, providing experimental construction
elaborations. The volume reduction or the absence of applied research work
based on orders of the enterprises prevented the financial (material) base of
the institute laboratories from development, including that for an educational
process. At the same time it aroused the shortage of the amount of aspirants
and doctor-school students, as the themes of their qualification papers were
aimed at the solution of the enterprise problems. Unfortunately, not all the
institute departments had an opportunity and could take into consideration the
changing situation properly.
It’s noteworthy that in condition of market
relations considerable significance is given to the reliability of an executor,
which is usually guaranteed by the authority of a scientific school. For some
newly arranged IAGTPE specialities, which are realized by nearly a half of the
institute teaching staff, these scientific schools have not yet been formed.
The above-mentioned circumstances to some extend find its reflection in finance
volume redistribution for the institute scientific research accomplishment.
Nowadays the lines of fundamental scientific
research institute elaborations are defined according to the decisions of the
Russian Federation Government ¹2727, 2728, of 1996 “The priority trends of
fundamental research and critical technologies of the federal level”. For the
period of 2000-2004 the institute fundamental scientific researches, completed
at the expense of budget means, are considerably connected with the problems of
aviation construction and include:
elaboration of fundamental and applied bases of
aircraft projecting, new arrangement schemes, creation of the methods of
objective evaluation of the mentioned transport schemes (departments AHD, SMA,
SM, ACD, the theme supervisor – professor Firsov V.A.);
expansion of fundamental knowledge on the
processes of burning, hydrodynamics and heat exchange in canals with flow twist;
the investigation of side-by intensifiers and development of surfaces of
heat-exchange in condition of free and forced liquid or gas convection. On the
basis of the acquired knowledge and investigation results scientific methods of
calculation of the mentioned processes for projecting of optimal mixers of
burners and heat exchangers are worked out (departments TBHT, AIPI, the theme
supervisor is professor Gortyshov U.F.);
definition of fundamental patterns of
convective heat exchange at the surfaces with transverse depressions (hollows)
or with spherical ledges at diverse regimes of heat bearer flow with the
purpose of working out the recommendations on projecting the efficient heat
exchange surfaces (the department Problematic laboratory of turbo machines, the
supervisor of the theme is professor Shukin A.V.);
creation of scientific bases of the theory of
shaping the details of a complicated profile for the aviation technique
(departments PA, EPT, the theme supervisor – Khaliulin V.I.);
fundamental investigations of the processes and
features of substances under condition of high parameters in physical tasks of
the problems of power engineering in engine construction with the aim of new
principles discovery in the processes of burning, in hydrodynamics and heat
exchange of space currents (departments CE, TM, TBHT, AES, MS, CB, IE, DGMD,
the theme supervisor is professor Dregalin A.F.).
The institute accomplishes about 22% of the
volume of self-supporting scientific researches of the university. Among the
institute departments the distribution of the institute volume is extremely
uneven.
The themes of scientific-research works of
IAGTPE are in full accordance with the profile of teaching in Institute
Engineering Specialities; and it gives the high level of Graduate Engineers. In
this researches our students are participating very actively; the students
results are commended the Diplomas of Russian Scientific Students Competitions.
In 2001/2002 one our student was awarded the
Grant of RF President; two our students were awarded the Grants of Boeing
Company; one student – the Grant of General Electric Company.
Many years have passed since the foundation of
the Faculty of aviation construction and the Faculty of motor construction –
the basis of nowadays IAGTPE. In the course of this time many problems appeared
and were solved in the life of the Faculty, many problems aroused in the last
decade of 1990-s in connection with large reformation in Russia. Today we
understand the essence of these problems and some of them will be solved in
near future. It’s important that aviation, rocket and also mechanical
engineering specialities, which have given to KAI its authority and fame, will
be preserved in spite of all difficulties.
