The International Engine Engineering Congress(history and current state) S.V.Epifanov
National Aerospace University - KhAI Chkalova, 17, Kharkov, 61070,
Ukraine Early 70-s of the last century in the aviation
gas turbine engine engineering were characterized by the creation of the
fourth-generation engines with the basic peculiarity of substantial gas
temperature increase in front of the turbine and on this basis provision of
high fuel economy. The realization of this demanded the creation of gas
turbines with intense cooling of all the elements, and at first the elements,
directly contacting with gas flow, that is operating and nozzle blades
(shovels). The conditions of heat-exchange in shovels (blades), especially
considering rotation and creation of film barrier cooling had not been
perfectly known by that time, but even if there had been available models,
their program realization using current computing tools would have been
impossible. That's why the creation of the above mentioned turbines was
considerably influenced by the experimental research of the heat state of the
cooled elements. The effective tools for such investigations turned to be film
thermo-pairs, permitting to set temperature transmitters on any point of the
surface, without distorting the terms of its functioning by gas flow. They were
generated at the Department of construction and strength of aviation engines of
Kharkov Aviation Institute (KhAI) under the supervision of Dmitry Fyodorovich Simbirsky. This elaboration was of great interest for
designers and soon the laboratory of Thermostrength of the USSR Ministry of
Aviation Industry was established in Kharkov Aviation Institute, and in all the
leading aviation engine designer bureaus there were founded departments on
manufacturing film thermo-pairs. Bench tests of blades (shovels) and other
elements with their application were actively carried out. The staff of the KhAI laboratory didn't limit
itself to the elaboration of transmitters and measurement technologies. They
were developing the direction, connected with the measurement data processing
to define thermotense state of the investigated objects and the boundary heat
exchange conditions. There were also generated heat systems mathematical models
and was formed a new direction in the processing of heatmetrical experiment,
connected with the application of modern methods of inverse problems solution.
Later, in 1983, these projects brought State Premium of the USSR to KhAI staff
members D.F. Simbirsky and L.S. Grigoryev. And at that time, at the starting
point with the realization of a considerable significance of this problem there
was a great desire to bring together leading specialists, to exchange
information, to obtain their conclusions and consultation. Thus there appeared
the idea to carry out overall USSR Conference on high temperature measurement
on the base of KhAI. The first conference took place in 1973, the second - in
1977 in Kharkov. Since 1975 a new direction had appeared in the
laboratory. The experience of mathematical models and inverse problems solution
by the identification methods was in great demand - following the suggestion of
O.K.Antonov the Department initiated work on creation of methodical,
algorithmic and software supply of the board system of engine control of the
aircraft An-124 The laboratory was functioning very
intensively, the work on parametrical diagnostics was extended on other objects
(particularly on engine PC-90A) and soon it was renamed into the laboratory of
Engine Diagnostics. This direction was actively developed and two more
conferences (in 1983 in Kharkov and in 1990 in the settlement Rybachye) were
held to realize the information exchange among specialists. The organization of
the last conference was actively assisted by Deputy Minister of Aviation
Industry V.M. Chuyko. Years after 1991 didn't contribute to scientific forums
carrying out, sometimes there was an impression that they would never be of
great need any more. Each group survived by itself. Deprived of the state
financial support designers bureaus tried to find and settle the sources of
self financing and abruptly limited their links with scientific-research
groups. Though small First there was a chance to work at the
projects for ground gas turbine installations, then cooperation and aviation
enterprises were renewed. Also there was elaborated the direction, connected
with parametrical diagnostics of internal combustion engines. One more small
mobile scientific group had been formed in the Institute of Machinery and
Systems (Kharkov) by the middle 90-s. It was supervised by Alexander Vitalyevich
Belogub - the specialist in piston internal combustion engines, who was also a
lecturer at the Department of Construction and Strength of KhAI. The Director
of the Institute N.E. Ternyuk set the task of coordination of scientific
activity, connected with the generation of internal combustion engines in front
of this group. Thus in 1995 there appeared a suggestion to
hold a new conference, using the experience of KhAI concerning the carrying out
of such events and the demand of internal combustion engine development. The
analysis showed that such meetings of engineers hadn't been carried out in
Russia and the Ukraine for 5 years already, many enterprises just scraped their
living and a great goal of the leading scientists changed their activity of
left for abroad. That's why it was decided that as there was no sense of
narrowing the themes, it would be better to represent the whole range of
engine-engineering, including gas turbine, piston, because poverty could
prevent from bringing together many specialists. The width of the chosen
direction defined its name - In spite of very few participants (26 people),
the first Congress turned to be a success. It showed that the organizers' experience
was enough to carry out such events, they were extremely useful, as there was
an immense lack of communication among the leading specialists of the field.
There formed a circle of Organizers and at present among them it's necessary to
mention National Aerospace University named after N.E. Zhukovski - KhAI,
National Technical University - KhPI and Open Stockhold Company
Thus nowadays the Congress of Engine
Engineering has been formed as an annual forum of this field scientists.
Organizers - National Aerospace University named after N.E. Zhukovski (Kharkov
Aviation Institute), National Technical University (Kharkov Polytechnic
Institute) and Open Stockhold Company The typical peculiarity of the Congress is the
formation of major sections not on the basis of engine types, but according to
problems under consideration - Enterprises: ZMKB Scientific-research Iinstitutions: CIAM, VIAM,
IPU, Institute of Applied Mechanics, Centre named after M.V. Keldysh, IMET
named after Baikov, TIC-ITEK (Moscow), IPMash, UNIIPG, ITTF, IPM. IPP, IPMMS
(Kiev), IP GNU PM, ITMO (Minsk), NIKGID (Vladimir), DNFTI (Dnepropetrovsk), NII
ERAT (Lyubertsi). High School Institutions: NAU - KhAI , NTU -
KhPI, KhNADU, KhSAZT, KhNURE (Kharkov), NTTU - KPI, NAU (Kiev), DNU, DFMAUP
(Dnepropetrovsk), ZNTU (Zaporozhye), NSGU, USMTU (NIkolaev), KSIPI
(Simferopol), KMTI (Kerch), CNTU, CVMI (Sevastopol), VUNU (Lugansk), MSTU, MAI
(Moscow), KSTU-KAI (Kazan), USATU (Ufa), RSATA (Rybinsk), RSATA filial
(Tutaev), CPUVK, GMTU, SSPU (St. Petersburg), SSU (Samara), PPI (Pervomaisk,
Vladimir area), PSU (Penza), AzTU (Baku), ChVAI (Chelyabinsk), KIMSOU (Kolomna). It's evident that the Congress geography is
vast, the leading engine-engineering organizations are perfectly represented at
the Congresses. The place of carrying out, the settlement Rybachye, the Crimea,
gives possibilities for sections work, as well as for informal communication. The 9-th Engine Engineering Congress: September
