2-nd Baumanskaya St., 5, Moscow, 105005, Russia

Emperor Nicolas the 1st approved "Regulations on Industrial School" in 1830. This is considered the birthday of Bauman Moscow State Technical University (MSTU).

The University contributed much in development of technical education in Russia, in formation and progress of many domestic industries. Our University has graduated more than 170000 engineers of various professions.

About 20 institutes of higher education and research institutes were formed on the basis of MSTU's departments and laboratories. Professors and graduates of this old technical Institute of higher education in Russia contributed much in formation and development of our aviation, rocket production and cosmonautics. MSTU's professor N.E.Jukovskiy laid the foundations of scientific schools in the field of theoretical mechanics and aerodynamics and educated a constellation of scientists and designers, who set forth the progress of aircraft construction for many years. Among them were Academicians S.A.Chaplygin and A.N.Tupolev, General Designers P.O.Suhoy and L.A.Lavochkin, Professors V.P.Vetchinkin, B.N.Yuryev, etc.

With their active participation the Central Aerodynamic Institute and Air Force Engineering Academy were founded which played a significant role in development of rocket production and cosmonautics. During the next years on the basis of MSTU there were found Moscow Aviation Institute, All-Russian Institute of aviation materials and Central Institute of aviation motor industry which made an additional contribution in development of rocket engineering.

Many of the outstanding achievements of engineering thoughts are associated with the names of MSTU's graduates. Among these achievements there are the first artificial Earth satellite, the first manned space flight, the first space walk. The Council of the Chief Designers of rocket engineering was headed by MSTU's graduate Academician S.P.Korolev. The Council included two more graduates of our University: Academicians N.A.Pilyugin and V.P.Barmin. The other members of the Council lectured and Advised at Bauman MSTU.

In 1948 the "Rocket Engineering" faculty was established in MSTU ant it developed with active participation of S.P.Korolev and Yu.A.Pobedonoscev.

Since 1951 the General Designer of aviation and rocket engineering Academician V.N.Chelomey worked in MSTU. His name is associated with a series of maneuvering satellites "Polet", manned space station "Salyut", heavy carrier "Proton" and a whole number of unique products. Under his guidance in 1960 the department of "Aerospace Systems" was established in MSTU.

Academician V.P.Barmin who was the General Designer of launching complexes founded the department of "Launching Complexes" in MSTU in 1959 and headed it permanently for about 30 years.

Many famous scientists worked at the Faculty including Academician K.S.Kolesnikov and Correspoding Member of USSR Academy of Sciences V.I.Feodosyev.

Thousands of MSTU's graduates worked and work nowadays in rocket production and among them there are the heads of the branch S.A.Afanasyev and Yu.N.Koptev, well-known scientists and designers Academicians V.P.Legostaev and B.I.Katorgin, hundreds and thousands of ordinary engineers, designers and test pilots. Nine of MSTU's graduates have become space pilots.

For the rocket production branch MSTU trains engineers on more than 20 mechanical engineering and instrument making specialities.

The scientists of our University conduct scientific research and design works in the area of rocket engineering.

We succeeded much in the following fields:

-         design of large-size space constructions;

-         creation of robotic complexes for operating in extreme environment;

-         design of launching complexes;

-         mechanics and production of space materials;

-         small spacecrafts;

-         creation of algorithms for calculation and spacecrafts' trajectories optimization;

-         investigation of thermal processes in rocket engineering.

MSTU's departments have maintained and now develop communications with the leading organizations of the rocket production industry.

Igor Borisovich Fedorov, corresponding member of RAS, Professor; Rector of M.E.Bauman MSTU; graduated from N.E.Bauman Moscow Higher Technical College (specialized in Radioelectronic Systems); President of Russian Technical Universities Association; founder of scientific school in the

field of radar systems of increased anti-interference and informatively; Head of applied-research laboratory of radio and electronic engineering; has over 180 scientific publications including 7 monographs and 15 inventor's certificates.

Scientific interests: information proceeding in radio engineering systems, radar and laser systems, problems and concepts of fundamental engineering education.
