Oleg Nikolaevich Favorskiy

(to the 80-th Anniversary)

27 January 2009 was the 80th Anniversary of the Member of International Editorial Board of Russian-American Scientific Journal "APAAS" Oleg Nikolayevich Favorskiy. He is a Deputy Academician-Secretary of Department of Power Engineering, Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering and Control Problems of Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), Head of "Power Engineering" section at RAS in the position of Counselor of Presidium of RAS, Vice-President of International Energy Academy and Academy of Aviation and Aeronautics Sciences.

The main part of O.N.Favorskiy's creative life is associated with Central Institute for Aeronautical Motor Industry (CIAM). He started working there and formed himself as scientist, delivered his Candidate thesis on development of two-shaft turbojet engine theory and his Doctoral thesis on space nuclear power plants and heat transfer in space.

Possessing a splendid intuition he has always chosen the most significant problems of aircraft industry and power engineering to work at.

In particular Oleg Nikolayevich proved to be an excellent organizer of science, for a long time directing and coordinating design-theoretical and experimental work of a large CIAM department on research of nuclear and rocket engines and nuclear power plants with direct conversion of thermal power into electric one.

His undoubted organizational abilities were highly appreciated in aircraft industry and in 1971 he was appointed the First Deputy Head of CIAM. Since 1973 till 1988 he worked as the Head and Chief Designer of Moscow scientific production association "Soyuz".

A number of outstanding achievements were obtained at "Soyuz" at that time. Engines R27-300 and R95-300 were developed and applied in aviation together with unique dual-flow afterburning gas turbine engine R79-300 and shaft-turbine engine TV-O-100.

O.N.Favorskiy's great services in design of engines and power plants were deservedly awarded with Lenin's and National Awards and highly appreciated by the scientific society who elected him as a full member of RAS where he has been successfully working in many structural departments and councils.

Oleg Nikolayevich, being a Professor of Moscow Physical and Technical Institute, has been paying much attention not only towards scientific activities but also to the training of young specialists. He has supervised over sixty post-graduate students, and five of them gained Doctor's degrees. His monographs became a basis for many courses of lectures delivered at different higher schools of Russia and CIS.

During the last years Oleg Nikolayevich has been paying much attention to development of some new alternative energy sources. For his works in energetic he was awarded with one of the most prestigious international prizes "Global Energy" in 2008.

O.N.Favorskiy is a member of several academic councils and editorial boards in different Russian scientific journals including our journal. He is the author of 6 books, over 220 papers and 60 inventions.

Nowadays his scientific interests are directed towards research in the field of power gas turbine plants, power engineering ecology and effect of jet aviation on atmospheric processes and environment. He is a Head of scientific school "Physical and chemical generation of hazardous compounds in power plants and jet engines" awarded with grants of the President of Russian Federation. These researches are deservedly appreciated and their results are widely used in different research institutes both in Russia and abroad.

Best wishes to our dear Oleg Nikolayevich!

We wish him happiness, new success and active work!
