Central Institute of Aviation Motors named after
P.I.Baranov (to 80-th Anniversary) V.A.Skibin The Central Institute of
Aviation Motors named after P.I.Baranov” A State Scientific Centre of the CIAM is a unique Russian research establishment
engaged in sophisticated research and development in the field of aero engines,
from fundamental study of physical processes up to joint work with design
bureaus on creation, upgrading and engines certification. CIAM is a State Scientific Center of Russian
Federation and implements functions on forecasting aero engine development
trends, definition of rational type composition and technical requirements
working out for new engines, improvement of their development methodology under
modern economical conditions. The modern technology of engine development is based
on integration of high-level mathematical modeling systems, computer-aided
design and computer-aided manufacture, that promotes reduction of the most
expensive component of engine perfection – its prototype upgrading.
CIAM’s turbomachinery computer-aided design and modeling are on the
up-to-date positions. The design practice applies 3D methods of unsteady
viscous flows, inverse tasks solution of elements optimization,
multidisciplinary approaches to conjugate gas dynamics and heat exchange tasks
in GTE systems, etc. Developed is modeling unsteady processes of gasdynamic
stability loss, compressor flutter and others. Solution of complex scientific and technical tasks of
creating engines, which meet contradicting requirements of high operation
efficiency and user affordability resulted in development of low stage high
loaded compressors with small number wide chord blades; high temperature
combustors; durable high gradient
turbines; FADECs with intelligent sensors and drivers integrated with
technical diagnostic system. A necessary component of industrial aero engine
complex is a powerful experimental base for rig testing engines, their units
and systems. Such facilities with unique capabilities to reproduce conditions
of flight speed and altitude have been forming in our country within many
decades in P.I.Baranov CIAM. In accordance with significantly increased
assignment requirements and wider test types for safer and more efficient
operation these facilities modernize, including tests information. Critical technologies for advanced engines, new design
of main turbomachinery components (compressors, turbines, and combustors), new
types of bearings, seals, wide-chord fan blades etc. with application of
composite and ceramic materials are being developed. Their implementation will
assure significant smaller mass and part number in the engine, greater lifetime
and reliability, and lower operation cost. On all the life cycle stages of aero engines, the
development and introduction of newest techniques and means of information
support are coordinated. It is worldwide recognized the scientific contribution
of CIAM in solution of problems of hypersonic scramjets development. The
unique scientific, methodological, and experimental base of the Institute
maintains a high level of research in this direction using computer modeling
software, land test facilities and flight test hardware for high Mach numbers. A large team of outstanding scientists is successfully
working in CIAM, which effectively manages world-known schools in the fields of
physics and technology problems of power generation, hypersonic technology,
theory of boundary layer, turbulence, combustion and heat-transfer,
electroconducting gas flow, turbomachinery gas dynamics, dynamics and
strengths, engine theory, high level mathematic modeling, high-energy fuels and
other disciplines. Cutting development and manufacture scope alongside
with lower prestige of engineer motorist profession from 1990 caused an acute
personnel crisis both in motor industry and national aviation as a whole.
Therefore, one of important aero engine industry tasks is development of the
domestic engineering and technical motor courses. To solve this task in CIAM
act chair departments of the five leading institutes (MFTI, N.E. Bauman MVTU,
MAI, MATI, MEI), as well as postgraduate course. In the eve of its 80 years, the CIAM holds an
international scientific and technical conference devoted to the development
problems of the XXI Century engines. CIAM optimistically meets its jubilee and
is ready further honestly fulfill a responsible and honorable role of the
National Center of Russian Aero Engines. |
