Second National Russian Conference "Physical-Chemical Problems of Hydrocarbon Fuel Combustion"
(Moscow, May, 20-22, 1998)
The second All-Russian Conference "Physical-Chemical Problems of
Hydrocarbon Fuel Combustion" was held in Moscow (May, 20-22, 1998). The Conference was
sponsored by the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the
Ministry of Economy with active participation of academic, industrial scientific-research
institutes and design bureaus.
The main objective of the conference was to discuss and generalize the
results of theoretical and experimental studies, with a special emphasis on improved
efficiency of industrial power unit combustion chambers to minimize pollution and other
adverse effects of power facilities on the environment.
Primarily it refers to minimization of adverse effects of stationary
and mobile power units on the atmosphere and environment through formation of dangerous
components.
Insufficient attention to the above mentioned issues in Russian
Federation along with other hazardous industries and drastic increase of power resources
cost makes this issue of high priority.
The Chairman of Scientific-Organizing Committee is Academician
O.N.Favorskiy-CIAM Head Deputy; Members of this Committee are the scientists, famous in
the of physical-technical problems area (Dr. V.Bayev, Dr. A.Vatazhin, Dr. A.Losev,…).
More than 150 specialists from academic and industrial
scientific-research institutes, design bureaus, technical universities and aviation design
bureaus were participing at the conference. They presented 95 papers; 20 special reports
delivered by experts from CIAM.
Papers were presented, covering the following subjects:
- theoretical and applied aspects of hydrocarbon combustion in power units;
- ecological aspects of hydrocarbon fuel combustion and air pollution;
- combustion process simulation;
- kinetics of hydrocarbon fuel combustion.
Also the results of studies addressing kinetic processes were reviewed
that involve emission of NOx and other nitrogen containing compounds, as well as C-, H-,
S- containing compounds resulting from hydrocarbon combustion. Mechanisms of aerosols
formation were also discussed. Participants discussed also various methods to decrease NOx
emission in combustion chambers of different schemes.
New computer models describing hydrodynamic and kinetic processes,
studies of efficient numerical methods including those for description of turbulence
combustion, non-stationary processes in reactive media, kinetic mechanisms in fires of
different types were presented. Papers presented by CIAM specialists on these issues
brought about a lot of response and interest.
A special session of the Conference addressed problems associated with
combustion in supersonic flows, which are of crucial importance for supersonic vehicles
with air-fed jet engines. It is closely connected with the problem of efficient mixing,
ignition and combustion stabilization. Shock-wave complex structure in a supersonic flow
affects processes of mixing and combustion, development and verification on the results of
studies, worked out in CIAM, TSAGI, Institute of Thermal Physics, design bureau
"Soyuz", were presented at conference. Also representatives of SNEKMA (France) and DLR
(Germany) participated with interesting papers.
At the closing ceremony of the conference it was announced that the
conference will be held annually and will be an International Conference.
Proceedings of the conference were issued; and it is available for
interested scientists, engineers, Companies.
