Regional EmNet/NIS node
From 1994 the Civil network
functions in Kazan, which combine different uncommercial
organisations. At the end of 1995 more than 80 scientific,
educational and cultural organisations were subscribers
of this network. 11 higher educational institutions
and 5 institutes of Kazan Scientific Centre work
now active in Civil network.
Kazan Civil network is created on base of Kazan
university network with support of foundations ISF, IREX, RFFR
and Russian State Committee of High Education. KSU supports the
central node of Civil network and provide free access to
Internet.
Network infrastructure
University network combines the local networks of
faculties. The Ethernet technology is used. More then 300
workstations (PC 486/386/286), 12 Novell Netware servers (ver.
4.10), 7 SUN stations under SOLARIS, ORACLE server (Pentium, OS/
2), UNIX server with 40 terminals (PC-486, Interactive UNIX) are
working in network.
Internet access is carried out through three independent
providers: mathematical network of RAS (channel 28800 bps),
FREEnet (dedicated channel, 28800 bps), RUNNet (dedicated
channel to IP provider in Ulyanovsk ,28800 bps). KSU network is
an autonomous system. There are WWW-server (www.ksu.ru) and FTP-
server (ftp.ksu.ru) in network.
Qualification of network personnel
Regional Internet network node is served by high
qualification specialitists from Computer Center of KSU. They
are the best in Kazan. The leader of network group is a member
of EmNet/NIS/II technical committee.
Network experience:
- LAN level: designing, mounting and exploitation from
1991;
- MAN level: starting of Kazan Civil network from November
1994;
- WAN level: creating of first RELCOM node in KSU at 1992;
organizing of regional Internet node at August 1994;
