Brief information about the Republic of Tatarstan
Official name of the State - the Republic of Tatarstan.
"The Republic of Tatarstan is a sovereign state, a subject
of international law, associated with the Russian Federation on the
basis of the Treaty on mutual delegation of powers and jurisdictional subjects".

The Republic of Tatarstan was formed on May 27, 1920. The capital of Tatarstan is Kazan, a city with the population of 1,100,000 people. The total area of Tatarstan is 68,000 sq.km. The population of Tatarstan was estimated as 3,754,800 at 1995.
The Republic of Tatarstan is situated in the extreme east of Europe, at the place of junction of two rivers - Volga and Kama.
The climate is moderate continental, sometimes with hot summer and moderate cold winter. The average temperature of January is -14°C; of July - +19°C; the yearly average temperature is -2.5°C (36.5°F); the yearly average precipitation value reaches 500 mm, summer and autumn account for 65% of this value.
According to the Constitution of the Republic of Tatarstan, adopted on November 6, 1992, equal rights in all spheres of political, economic and cultural life are guaranteed to all the citizens.
Tatarstan proclaimed its territory as a zone, free of mass destruction weapons. As for the Constitution, the land, mineral wealth, water, forest and other natural resources, the animal and vegetable kingdom, means of State budget, assets of national banks are the property of the whole people. It's economy is based on social market principles, various forms of property is allowed; the property is inviolable; equal conditions of legal protection of various forms of property are provided. The property of other states, international organizations, foreign legal persons and stateless persons is allowed in the Republic of Tatarstan. Land plots, used in any sphere of activities not prohibited by the law, may be the private property.
A supreme permanent legislative and representative body of the Republic of Tatarstan is the State Council. The head of the state is the President. An executive and administrative body of state power of the Republic of Tatarstan is the Cabinet of Ministers. i.e. Government headed by the Prime Minister.
Tatars are the most northern group of Muslims. Sunnite branch of Islam reached the territory of Tatarstan early in the 10th century. The Orthodox Christianity began to disseminate in the middle of the 16th century just after the Kazan Khanate conquest. This religion is professed by the other part of the population: the Russians, the Chuvashs, the Maris, at al.
There are about twenty institutes of higher education in Tatarstan. The oldest of them is Kazan State University (founded in 1804). Today, Tatarstan has its own Academy of Science. There is also Kazan Scientific Centre of Russian Academy of Sciences. The basic fields of fundamental and applied research are follows: magnetic physics, medicine and medical equipment, optical and microelectronics, theory of oil extraction, organic and physical chemistry etc.
