XI SUMMER SCHOOL-SEMINAR
VOLGA-11'99
Kazan, Russia (5.07.99 - 16.07.99)
General Information
The ХI school-seminar "Volga-11'99" ("the XI Petrov school"), was attended
by 147 people who for the most part were students, post-graduates and young
scientists from different parts of this country, CIS countries and all over
the world. Prominent scientist holding leading scientific positions in the
scientific world and belonging to foremost domestic (the Universities of
Moscow, Tomsk, Nizhniy Novgorod, BSU (Minsk), RUFP (Moscow), Sci.Center
"ITEP" of Russian Federation, Physics Insti-tute of RAS, IPP of RAS, ISE
of RAS, Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna), IM of RAS, IMM of RAS,
Kazan Physical-Technical Institute of RAS) and foreign (Aberdeen University,
National Institute for Nuclear Research of Mexico, Olomouz University and
others) educational and research centres de-livered 12 courses of lectures
and 14 surveys. The school attendees brought to discussion topical prob-lems
in such fields of theoretical and mathematical physics as classical and
quantum integrable systems, string and superstring theory, conformal field
theory, supersymmetry theory, calibration theory, algebraic geometry,
stratification topology, difference equations, numerical methods in
astrophysics, mathematical and physical essentials of quantum cybernetics
and others. The students submitted to the lecturers brief reports and
posters. World famous domestic and foreign scientific schools in the field
of physics and mathematics have made a significant contribution to the
development of the above mentioned directions of research and continue to
give considerable assistance in the solution to the above problems. A
stu-dent seminar organized by A.Yu.Morozov proved to be an innovation in
school work, a large contribu-tion to which was made by the students of
MPTI as well as by ones belonging to the Universities of Moscow, Nizhniy
Novgorod, Kazan and Kiev. Quite often discussions arising in the conference
hall were carried over into living rooms and continued until late at night.
Evening interviews with the lecturers allowed students to turn the more human
and scholarly experiences of the prominent scientists, and cre-ated an
atmosphere of democracy and encouraged young scientists to be at case. Thus,
the interview with L.A.Sudarikov, a representative of Ministry of Science of
Tatarstan Republic, grew into a talk about future of Russia's science. The
school seminars were held under the badge of the 275th anniver-sary of
Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS). At the opening meeting the academician
of the RAS and chairman of Presidium of the Kazan Scientific Center of the
Russian Academy of Sciences A.I.Konovalov devoted his speech "Kazan and
Russian Academy of Sciences" to this. His speech was composed of a great
number of examples of people's faithful service to science. This date was
also marked by participants' visit to the exposition "Russian Academy of
Sciences 275 years old" especially arranged in the museum of history of
the University of Kazan. All school printed material and all articles of
a school participant's set were set in a jubilee logotype, that was also
printed on especially made T-shirts.
The proceedings of the school gave birth to 7 books including the brochures
"A.Z.Petrov" and "A.P.Shirokov". In press are the first part of the third
volume of "Notes on lectures on theoretical and mathematical physics" and
"Proceedings of the school-seminar Volga" coming out within the "Recent
problems in the field theory" series.
The opening meeting of the XI Petrov readings took place in the museum
of history of the Uni-versity of Kazan. After the anniversary speech by
academician A.I.Konovalov and the report by assis-tant-professor
M.A.Malakhaltsev devoted to the memory of outstanding geometrician Prof.
A.P.Shirokov, who died on September 29, 1998, there was a lecture by the
director of the Kazan Physical-Technical Institute, corresponding member
of Russian Academy of Sciences, K.M.Salikhov "Quantum computations and
quantum computers". The opening ceremony concluded with a concert by the
winner of international contests, the monk's choir "The Pulpit".
When the weather was fine lectures and interviews were held on the
"stairs"- an open area on the side of the Volga, surrounded by pine-trees
and equipped with seats for listeners, arranged in the form of a semicircle.
To this place they brought a huge samovar with boiling water for tea-drinking. The interviews were often ended with amateur concerts with verse declarations and singing organized by the listeners. The school attendees could enjoy concerts of classical music especially arranged for them, take part in a multi-board chess play conducted on 16 boards by K.Igudesman, the 1998 champion of Tatarstan and winner of the Russia's club championship, go sightseeing in Kazan or take delight in the aquatic festival "Nupetune's Day" and the national tatar festival "Sabantuy". Apart from the above they could compete in volleyball and football, go boating or go for an outing to the lake Glukhoe. At the closing meeting they gathered together by a huge campfire set on the bank of the lake Yaltchik in the national park of Republic of Mariy El "Chodra".
The work of the school-seminar drew public attention and was covered in the
press (the news-paper "Shakhri Kazan") and on radio (the radio station
"Radio of Tatarstan"). A special block in the television program "Steps"
(Channel IV) was also given up to it. The organizers prepared colourful
in-formational posters and created continuously operating site on the
Internet (URL: http://www.kcn.ru/petrov_school).
The work of the school-seminar "Volga-11'99" formed favourable conditions
for mastery of contemporary methods of research carried out to high
international standards.
The school-seminar made significant contribution to integrating higher
education with funda-mental science, developing science in regional centers,
engaging talented youth in the sphere of educa-tion and science, preventing
so-called "brain-drain" of the country and strengthening the authority of
domestic scientific schools and educational centers in the world.
Overview
Conducted under the patronage of the State University of Kazan, the summer
school-seminar for young scientists on modern problems in theoretical and
mathematical physics has been assembled each year since 1987.
Since the very time of its foundation the school has continued the course
towards integration of higher education with fundamental science. Thus,
the work in school seminars is shared by many spe-cialists from the main
domestic (the Universities of Moscow, Saint-Petersburg Tomsk and Nizhniy
Novgorod, Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics of RAS, Physics
Institute of RAS, IPP of RAS, IAM of RAS, IC of RAS and others) ands foreign
educational and research centres, centres of North America, Europe and Asia
countries (USA, France, UK, Belgium, Germany, India, Rumania, Czech Republic,
Japan and others).
The main objectives guiding the work of the school are creating conditions
within this country for students' mastery of contemporary techniques to
carry out research up to the international stan-dards, engaging for this
purpose specialists from leading foreign and home scientific schools and
educa-tional centres, preserving, maintaining and developing native
scholarly and pedagogic traditions, estab-lishing in the future a centre
for continuous education (following the example of similar centre for
theo-retical physics in Italy, with which the organisers have a treaty of
intentions for collaboration, and other similar centres in Europe and USA)
as well as a network of such centres throughout the country involv-ing for
this foremost educational and research institutes. The above measures are
to promote effectively talented youth into the sphere of education and
science and prevent the so-called "brain-drain" of the country.
The school seminars are held in the third week of June in a recreation area
situated 40 kilome-tres of Kazan on the bank of the river Volga and
surrounded by coniferous and deciduous forests. In-tensive studies and
research go along with sports activity and entertainment. At the disposal
of the school attendees are volleyball and basketball sports grounds,
tennis courts and nice beach with boats available.
There is at the same time a local summer school on physics and mathematics
"Kvant" (Quan-tum), organised for pupils of secondary schools. Following
the tradition participants of the school-seminar deliver the pupils of Kvant
lectures, organise competitions and conduct discussions, thus con-tributing
to the forming of their occupational guidance and continuity of scientific
traditions.
The last school-seminar "Volga 10'98" was attended by 98 people who for
the most part were students, post-graduates and young scientists from
different parts of this country, CIS countries and all over the world.
Prominent scientist holding leading positions in the scintific world science
and belonging to foremost domestic (the Universities of Moscow, Tomsk,
Nizhniy Novgorod, BSU, RUFP, Sci.Center "ITEP" of Russian Federation,
Physics Institute of RAS, IPP of RAS, ISE of RAS, Institute for Nuclear
Research (Dubna), IM of Ural Sci Center of RAS, IMM of Kazan Sci Center
of RAS, RRIMS, Kazan Physical-Technical Institute of RAS) and foreign
(University of Aberdeen, Iwate Uni-versity, Tsukuba University, Yamagata
University, Timisoara University and others) educational and research
centres delivered 12 courses of lectures and 16 surveys. The school
attendees brought to dis-cussion topical problems in such fields of
theoretical and mathematical physics as string and bran theory, quantum
black holes, supersymmetry theory, calibration theory, topology of vector
stratifications and others. They also took part in joint official, social
ad sports activity with pupils from the local school "Kvant", organised
for them a competition on mathematics five laps of which involved 77
participants (19 teams).
The school preparations were shared by the Student League of Republic of
Tatarstan and the governmental Committee for Affairs of Youth in Republic
of Tatarstan. The school attendees could en-joy concerts of classical music,
excursions and a ship trip, especially organized for them, and witness
national tatar festival "Sabantuy". In honour of the Japanese delegation
there was a special reception in the republican centre "Sakura".
Two television programs in "Tatarstan news" were given up to the work of
the school-seminar. The school proceedings gave birth to 5 publications
that reflect the latest scientific achievements in the field of theoretical
and mathematical physics.
